Facilities staff recommends exploring K–8 conversions, consultant to scope Stone, McNair and Johnson
Summary
Facilities staff said a new contract with Perkins Eastman and limited staff capacity mean the district should pilot K–8 conversion studies at priority feeder chains. Board members signaled interest in Stone and McNair as initial priorities and asked staff to return with consultant scopes and cost estimates.

Miss Hanser reviewed the strategic facilities work since mid-2024, summarized the baseline conditions report and explained that the district issued an RFQ and selected Perkins Eastman as the new planning consultant. She said staff confirmed two earlier decisions (Central Middle to Johnson boundary adjustments and KVU consolidation to Roosevelt) and recommended further study on K–8 concepts in three feeder chains identified in earlier consultant work: Stone, McNair and Johnson.
"We chose to work on the Central Middle to Johnson Middle as well as the KV Roosevelt projects," Miss Hanser said, noting limited staff capacity to pursue many large projects at once and the need for thorough community engagement if the board wants to move forward. She recommended asking the consultant for a scoped proposal that could evaluate one or all three K–8 options and return with pricing and stakeholder-engagement plans.
Board members asked which of the three feeder chains should be prioritized. Several members favored Stone (because the facility is aging) and McNair (because of under-enrollment). A board member asked for clarity after rumors that McNair might be closed; Miss Hanser said that is not the district’s intent and noted a planned roughly $2.6 million roof investment at McNair.
Members asked staff to return with consultant scopes that evaluate all three options (so the district does not duplicate work across separate contracts) and to include community engagement costs and timelines. No formal vote was taken; staff will return with proposals and cost estimates.
