Washington Township High School moves from bronze to College Board Gold as AP participation rises

Brent, principal of Washington Township High School, told the board March 9 that the school's Advanced Placement program has expanded to 11 course offerings and that student participation has climbed from 36% in 2022 to 71% in 2025.
"In 2025, 71 percent of our students are experiencing an AP course at some point in time during their high school career," Brent said during his presentation. He said the school moved from bronze to a gold rating on the College Board AP Honor Roll in the most recent review.
Brent described the three metrics the honor roll uses: college‑culture (percent of students who take an AP exam), college credit (percent scoring 3 or higher), and college optimization (students taking five or more AP exams, with at least one taken in freshman or sophomore year). "We were at 68% (college culture)," Brent said, and the district met the threshold for Gold; he said the district aims for a future platinum rating (80% participation and higher optimization).
The board honored two students chosen as BigFuture ambassadors; Liam Powell attended and will serve alongside Addison Paris (absent) to help classmates use BigFuture.org for college and career planning. The board presented an award to Liam.
Board members praised teachers and staff for the improvement and discussed using these achievements as documentation for an anticipated referendum in the coming 1–3 years. "Keep writing a notebook of what things are that we've accomplished," the board president advised staff during the meeting.
Next steps: staff said they will continue outreach about AP opportunities and pursue collection of outcome data to support district communications and any future referendum outreach.
