Summary
The board approved adopting Amplify ELA for grades 6—8, citing Indiana code requirements for reading instruction rooted in the science of reading; the district will pilot the program this spring and add three additional full-length texts to increase volume of complete readings.
The Carmel Clay Schools board approved the adoption of Amplify ELA for sixth through eighth grades after a staff presentation explaining the district's duty under Indiana code to provide reading instruction grounded in the science of reading.
Dr. Dudley (S3) told trustees the program offers comprehensive instruction in reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar and speaking/listening, and that each unit centers on quality literature and informational text. The curriculum includes excerpts from larger works but staff recommended adding three additional full-length texts at each middle-school grade level to increase students' exposure to complete books.
According to Dr. Dudley, the district will pilot Amplify ELA in spring at its middle schools and integrate the selected full-length texts into grade-level plans. Board members moved and seconded the adoption and approved the curriculum by voice vote, motion carried 4—0.
Dr. Dudley framed the adoption as part of broader district efforts to strengthen foundational literacy and align instruction with state expectations; she also described advisory and curriculum-committee processes used to select and vet courses and materials.
