Officials flag hazard at 803 North Newark; 302 South Lane set for follow-up

Staff told the Decatur Building Standards Commission that 803 North Newark is a small residential structure whose walls are collapsing and that the building is sitting on cinder blocks, creating a real hazard. Staff said no one is currently living in the structure and that they delayed formal action to complete notifications for lienholders and other parties.
On 302 South Lane, staff reported unpermitted work and hazardous conditions. The owner has discussed floor plans with staff and said he intended to rebuild, but no building permits have been pulled. Staff said they are attempting to gain voluntary compliance and will return the case to the commission if the owner does not move forward.
Commissioners prioritized 803 North Newark for the February Building Standards Commission agenda and set 302 South Lane for the March agenda to allow time for voluntary compliance. Staff said that additional code enforcement actions are possible and that unresolved violations could proceed to municipal court; they have begun that process in at least one case.
During new business, staff reported a verbal commitment from Katrina Mohammed to submit an application for a commission vacancy and confirmed the commission’s February meeting will fall on the third Wednesday because of a President’s Day holiday.
Commissioner Danny Cross asked whether officials could force cleanup of lots where partial demolition left clutter; staff said code enforcement steps and municipal-court actions are options if owners do not comply.
