Planning commission recommends Samir Mohammed to fill vacant seat, names two alternates

The Planning and Zoning Commission voted Dec. 2 to recommend Samir Mohammed to fill a vacancy on the commission and ranked Melinda Ray and Brad Morgan as alternates; commissioners also asked the City Council to consider whether simultaneous service on multiple advisory boards should be permitted.
The Planning and Zoning Commission recommended Dec. 2 that City Council appoint Samir (Sammer) Mohammed to fill the vacancy left by Commissioner Terry Baruvi and rank Melinda Ray and Brad Morgan as alternates.
Planning Director Lisa Hannon said three applicants were reviewed and scored; staff recommended Samir Mohammed as the primary candidate with Melinda Ray and Brad Morgan as alternates to aid succession planning. Hannon said the score sheets and applications were included in the agenda packet.
Commissioners discussed whether an individual should be allowed to serve simultaneously on multiple advisory bodies. Staff said the city charter does not expressly prohibit service on both the Board of Adjustments and Planning and Zoning; counsel said staff would verify and report back to City Council before any appointment is finalized if necessary. Commissioners recommended that Council consider whether dual service should be permitted.
The commission moved to recommend Samir Mohammed as the appointment and to forward the ranked alternates to City Council. The motion passed by voice vote.
