Narragansett committee gives first reading to AI-use policy developed with students and parents

The Narragansett School Committee unanimously approved the first reading of a new district AI policy after a presentation by Vanessa Miller, the district tech coach, and discussion among committee members.
Vanessa Miller described the multi-year, stakeholder-driven process: surveys of parents, students and staff, classroom visits, and a working committee that included school committee members, administrators and parents. "We did surveys of the community, of parents, of our students, of our staff, and we're able to compile that information," Miller said as she summarized version four of the draft policy.
Superintendent Dr. Cummings and committee members said the policy is designed to address three core concerns raised during the process: protecting student data, preserving the teacherstudent relationship (keeping the human in education), and reducing misuse such as academic dishonesty. "When you're representing work that is not your own ... whether it comes from a book, the web, or from AI, it is still representing work that is not your own," Dr. Cummings said, tying the policy to existing academic integrity rules.
Committee members who participated in the drafting process praised the policy as an "appropriate use" framework rather than an outright ban on AI. The policy includes an annual review by the committee and anticipates an operational implementation document (guidelines) that will be developed to support classroom practice and staff training. The committee approved the first reading 5-0 and will return the policy for a second reading and adoption at the next meeting.
Outcome: First reading approved 5-0; next step is a second reading and adoption vote.
