Summary
The Narragansett School Committee unanimously approved a $37,996,656 fiscal 2027 budget and authorized the purchase of 21 Dell Pro Max desktops funded by a state 20 First Century Learning Grant; the district highlighted a decade-long 64% rise in students taking AP courses.
The Narragansett School Committee voted unanimously to approve a $37,996,656 fiscal year 2027 budget and approved a related technology purchase at its evening meeting.
Dr. Cummings, the superintendent, told the committee the budget represents a 2.3% increase in the town appropriation and described it as "extremely reasonable" and "fiscally responsible," while still funding capital priorities and classroom supports. The committee recorded the motion to approve the budget and the measure passed 5-0.
Karen, the district finance presenter, provided an eight-month snapshot of spending: $21,060,384 in expenses through Feb. 28 (56.77% of the budget) and $32,493,364 including encumbrances (87.59%). The committee discussed the districts long-term capital plan and noted earlier presentations and workshops that addressed questions about priorities.
The committee also approved a purchase of 21 Dell Pro Max tower T2 desktops for the high school computer lab at a total cost of $40,470.99. Karen said the purchase is coming from the State 20 First Century Learning Grant for technology; the district expects 100% reimbursement. Dr. Cummings said the systems are intended for advanced coursework and AI-related student work.
Committee members praised the budget for coming in below recent inflation figures while honoring contractual obligations and for sustaining programs such as CTE and AP offerings. Dr. Cummings highlighted district data showing a 64% increase over 10 years in the percentage of students taking AP classes, which he said reflects a Kthrough-12 focus on access to rigorous coursework.
The committee acknowledged capital projects that came in under budget this year, creating room in the capital plan to support a new elementary playground. Dr. Cummings will present the approved school budget to the town council on March 30 at 6:00 p.m. in this venue.
Outcome: the FY2027 budget passed 5-0; the Dell desktop purchase passed 5-0. The budget will be forwarded to the town council for review and appropriation consideration.
