Summary
Rachel Martin described GoGuardian device monitoring (beacon and smart alerts), the SUSO tip line from the state Office of School Safety, and urged families on steps to take if a student is targeted by sextortion, citing Braden’s Law and reporting resources.
Rachel Martin, the Monona Grove School District safety and security coordinator, described the district’s digital-monitoring tools and guidance for families responding to online exploitation.
Martin said the district uses GoGuardian on school-owned devices to filter and monitor activity. She distinguished two alert types: "beacon" alerts, which detect searches or interactions tied to suicide, self-harm or threats of violence, and "smart" alerts, which flag explicit content or proxy tools that attempt to bypass filters. Beacon alerts are routed to student services for prompt review and intervention; smart alerts are reviewed by building administrators to enforce device policies.
On reporting, Martin explained SUSO (Speak Up Speak Out), the Department of Justice Office of School Safety’s 24/7 confidential tip line. She said SUSO is human-staffed ("it is not AI generated") and can be accessed via an app or website; the district links to SUSO on its website and encourages students, families and community members to use it to report safety concerns.
Martin singled out Braden’s Law — recent state legislation that created felony penalties for sextortion of minors — and urged parents and guardians to treat sextortion as a crime and report it to law enforcement. She said families should "focus on the scam and not the shame," listen to a child who comes forward, avoid asking to see images, not make payments, not delete messages, and report to the platform and local police. Martin also cited resources that can assist in removal and investigation, including the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the Take It Down service and the FBI.
She described the district’s goal as early intervention: GoGuardian and SUSO provide channels to detect risk and route concerns to student services, law enforcement and other responders so students can receive support. Martin closed by offering to answer follow-up questions and by directing families to the district website.
