SVUSD honors CIF scholar-athletes and four elementary schools earn California Distinguished School status

The Saddleback Valley Unified School District board recognized district student-athletes and school sites during the meeting, celebrating CIF Southern Section academic team awards, individual scholar-athletes and the state’s California Distinguished School honors.
James Newton opened the recognitions, reporting that the district’s overall GPA for qualifying athletic programs was 3.47. Site administrators and coaches presented team awards: El Toro’s boys tennis team reported cumulative GPAs in the mid-3s; Laguna Hills’ girls track and field earned a collective 3.8 GPA; Mission Viejo’s boys cross-country reported a combined team GPA of 3.83; Trabuco Hills and other schools also presented team GPAs and highlights.
Individual scholar-athletes were recognized by site administrators. Armando Villas introduced Jack McKelvey (El Toro) and cited his 3.9 weighted GPA and participation in football and baseball; Kobe Lindsey introduced Cameron Bradshaw (El Toro) with a reported unweighted 4.0 and weighted 4.74 GPA and noted she will attend Princeton University in the fall. Sienna Scudia and other student representatives shared school achievements and upcoming events.
Superintendent Dr. Turner announced that four SVUSD elementary schools — De Portola, Robinson, Rancho Canada (Rancho Kenyatta referenced in the transcript), and Santiago STEAM Magnet — were named 2025 California Distinguished Schools. Principals from each campus described academic gains, improved dashboard metrics (including subgroup improvements), reduced suspension and absenteeism rates, and expanded inclusive practices that contributed to the recognition.
The recognitions underscored district academic and extracurricular achievements ahead of the close of the 2024–25 school year. Several student recipients also announced college plans and athletic postseason appearances.
