Paraprofessional urges stricter dress code; board plans student council input

Summary
A district paraprofessional urged the Hazleton Area School District board to enforce a stricter dress code and consider uniforms; board members said they will work with student council and administration but noted enforcement is difficult and the policy has been revised several times.
During the public-comment portion of the Hazleton Area School District meeting, paraprofessional Rosandra Ayon urged the board to take action on student dress, saying she had observed inappropriate attire and would support stricter enforcement or a uniform policy.
"I ask the police, the board, to take in consideration that do something about the dress code," Ayon said, describing students coming to school in revealing clothing and urging discipline. The board thanked her for the input and discussed how the issue has been recurrent.
One board member urged that the student body be given a voice and recommended working with administration and student council to craft a policy "that makes sense." The superintendent noted the district meets annually with student council and that dress-code changes have been tried multiple times over the last decade; members emphasized enforcement challenges and the desire not to ask administrators to police clothing at the expense of other duties.
The board said it will meet with student council in April to discuss dress-code concerns and consider options rather than moving immediately to a uniform requirement.
