Huntley Police Commission elects Jim Burgess chair, approves three background reports and removes one candidate

The Village of Huntley Police Commission elected Chairman Jim Burgess as its chairperson during its Jan. 10, 2025, meeting and approved background investigation reports for three lateral-transfer candidates while removing a fourth from the eligibility list.
Chrissy Hoover, director of human resources and organizational compliance, told commissioners that "per state statute, at the first meeting of each year the Commission is to elect a chairperson." Commissioner Judy Serrano moved to approve Jim Burgess as chair; Commissioner Dan Maloney seconded the motion, and the voice vote was recorded as all ayes.
Hoover also delivered a staffing update, saying the police department "has now three vacancies in the department; two are to be filled and the third will be determined at a later date." The update followed review of the Nov. 13, 2024 minutes and a brief report that edits to the commission's rules and regulations, discussed at the Nov. 13 meeting, were presented to and approved by the Village Board on Dec. 5, 2024. Hoover said she will send the newly approved rules and regulations to the Commission electronically.
The Commission entered executive session at 11:06 a.m. to consider background investigations and reconvened at 12:05 p.m. After the closed-session reports, commissioners disclosed their candidate rankings: Serrano and Burgess each listed candidates #2 and #3 as their top choices; Maloney listed candidates #1 and #3 as his top two. On a motion by Serrano, seconded by Burgess, the Commission approved the background investigation reports for candidates #1, #2 and #3 and voted to remove candidate #4 from the Lateral Transfer and Eligibility List; the voice vote was recorded as all ayes.
The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn at 12:18 p.m.; the minutes were signed and submitted by HR Generalist Melissa Thompson.
The Commission did not take further public action on hiring at the open meeting; Chief of Police Linda Hooten was absent and any formal appointment or next steps were not recorded in the minutes.
