I just won the state championship for our high school,” she said.
The board and coaches praised Newman as the first female wrestler from Brookings Harbor to take an OSAA state title and encouraged efforts to grow the girls’ program. Newman said more advertising and community support could help increase participation and urged younger girls to consider the sport.
Newman also said she plans to continue competing after high school: “I’m committing to the Treasure Valley community on Friday, hopefully,” she told the board, adding that the school’s coaches and family provided crucial support during her career.
Board members closed the recognition with congratulations and thanks to coaches and the community. No formal action was required for the recognition; the board moved on to district reports after the presentation.
