Summers County board approves calendar change, personnel slate and trip; holds executive session and takes no action on student discipline

Chair (S5) moved the board into executive session under West Virginia Code 6-9-8-4(2) to discuss employee discipline; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote, and the board entered executive session at 6:23 p.m. The executive session ended at 6:38 p.m.; the board received an update on a student-discipline matter and took no formal action.
On public motions and votes, the board approved the March 10 work-session and regular-meeting minutes after making an attendance correction; it later approved the March 16 meeting minutes. The minutes motions and subsequent votes were recorded in the minutes as discussed on the floor.
The board approved payment of district bills (motion by Mister Brogan, seconded and approved by voice vote). It also approved the superintendent's recommendation to treat April 3 as an in-person instruction day to make up a March 17 snow day; the change makes the last student day May 29 and the last staff day June 4.
The superintendent's recommendation for an out-of-state overnight trip for third-grade students to Wolf Creek Village (Bris[t]ow/Bris) on May 26, 2026, was approved. The board also accepted a large personnel slate: resignations, retirements, leaves, transfers, renewal of professional and service contracts and a contract amendment (including summer-school hires and transfers). The superintendent and staff read names into the record for additions to the personnel list.
Chair (S5) moved to accept the superintendent's personnel recommendations; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
The board discussed levy and budget timelines in the superintendent's report and agreed to schedule a budget hearing on April 28 with a statutory meeting for proposed levy rates moved to May 14 (subject to finalization); the board will finalize proposed rates and send them to the state auditor's office after the May statutory meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 7:35 p.m.
