At a public hearing Feb. 26, city staff reported five bids for demolition services at 7705 University Avenue, a property the city acquired through a FEMA flood‑buyout program. Staff told the council the city had estimated the project at about $100,000.
Staff listed the bids and said Pearson Dirtwork and Trucking submitted the lowest responsive bid of $49,900. "Staff recommends awarding the contract to Pearson Dirtwork and Trucking in the amount of $49,900 as the lowest responsive and responsible bidder," staff said during the presentation.
Council members asked about the $100,000 estimate and whether staff had included total project costs or other contingencies. Staff responded that past demolitions and square‑foot calculations were used for the estimate and noted some contractors were bidding more aggressively to win work.
After closing the public hearing (no in‑person or online commenters), the council voted on several items related to the project: they approved the plans and specifications, voted to receive the bids, and passed the resolution awarding the contract to Pearson Dirtwork and Trucking. All motions passed by a recorded vote of 5–0.
Staff said Pearson has previously worked with the city on demolition projects, expects to complete the job within 90 days, and that the project is FEMA‑funded. The council took no public comment on the award and directed staff to post the clerk’s votes as required.
