Port Orchard wins two cybersecurity grants for password manager and immutable backups

PORT ORCHARD — The city has been awarded two federal cybersecurity grants that staff expect to present to the City Council next week, IT staff said at the Feb. 17 finance committee meeting.
Sean, an IT staffer, said one award is about $16,000 to purchase and roll out a FedRAMP‑rated enterprise password manager for staff and provide training. "The product we're looking at is part of the government FedRAMP and government cloud rated ... it's Keeper," he said.
A second award, Sean said, is for approximately $48,500 to buy an on‑premises immutable backup appliance (hardware, licensing, three years of support and training). He described the system as enabling a full, rapid restore in the event of a ransomware or other destructive attack: "We could do a full restore of our entire systems ... in less than an hour."
Sean said the city currently uses cloud immutable backups but an on‑premises device would reduce restore time dramatically; staff said the grant-funded items are intended to improve continuity of operations and will require grama/grant acceptance paperwork signed by the mayor after council approval.
Director Bond said staff will recommend placing the grant acceptance on the council consent agenda next week after the finance committee review.
The committee had no substantive objections and asked that the grant items be routed through the usual council consent process.
