Port Orchard Planning Commission re-elects Tyler McCloskey, approves minutes and hears ADU and staffing updates

The Port Orchard Planning Commission re-elected Tyler McCloskey as chair and selected Wayne Wright as vice chair at its Feb. 3, 2026 meeting. The commission also voted to approve the minutes from its Nov. 4, 2025 meeting; an abstention was noted during that vote.
Community Development Director Nick Bond announced a hiring update: a job offer has been accepted for a senior building plans examiner and inspector, described as a licensed architect with a Master of Public Administration and certification as a building official. Bond said that hire should reduce reliance on consultant building staff and increase in-office availability for applicants.
Bond also said the department has two final preapproved accessory dwelling unit (ADU) plan types now available: one is roughly a 1,000-square-foot single-story ADU and the other is a carriage-house option that can be built as a two-car garage with a one-bedroom apartment above or a three-car garage with a two-bedroom apartment above. Bond said applicants must submit a site plan and pay permit fees and that the target turnaround for permits for these plans is under two weeks, for sites without critical-area constraints.
Bond reported the department received no comprehensive-plan amendment applications this year, which he said will lighten the commission’s workload in 2026, and previewed upcoming work on a Sherman Avenue stormwater park master plan and minor housekeeping code amendments. The commission adjourned and will meet next on March 3, 2026.
