Board approves $140,000 high-school field reconditioning contract after questions on maintenance plan

The Carlsbad Unified School District board on Aug. 13 approved a one-time contract to recondition athletic fields at the district's comprehensive high schools and softball fields, following pointed questions from trustees about long-term maintenance and prioritization.
During discussion on item 8.9, trustees and staff described the award as a short-term injection of work to bring several fields to safe, playable condition and to prevent further degradation. District staff said the work includes laser leveling, infield turf repairs and other refurbishing tasks that cost roughly $140,000 for the two baseball fields mentioned during deliberations.
Facilities staff told trustees the reconditioning is a one-time expense intended to restore fields to a baseline level and that maintenance moving forward will be handled by two dedicated crew members (rotating between schools on a 2/3-day schedule). Those positions would be paid from unrestricted funds and supplemented, where possible, by revenue generated from facility-use agreements.
Board members asked whether the fields were on the district's facilities master plan and how priorities were set. Staff said a director of maintenance and operations maintains an assessment schedule; baseball and softball fields were identified as high priorities during an assessment conducted earlier in the year. Trustees were told the Carlsbad High School Astroturf stadium is beyond its 10-year lifespan and will require a multimillion-dollar project in the future, while the current contract addresses lower-cost reconditioning needs.
Trustees also discussed equitable distribution of maintenance resources across high schools. One trustee asked whether the contract would be a permanent line in future budgets; staff said it was not, but confirmed a plan for dedicated staffing to reduce reliance on volunteers.
The board approved the contract 5-0. The motion was made and seconded during the consent calendar removal and then affirmed after discussion and a roll-call vote.
