Solid-waste staff: January cleanup yielded 14 40-yard containers of materials; tire pickup added

City solid-waste staff summarized the department’s programs and results from recent community clean events.
Staff reported four clean events scheduled this year (next on April 4) and said the January 10 event resulted in mostly trash by weight, with metals totaling 6.8 tons, self-haul at 6.3 tons, green waste 3.5 tons and tires 3.06 tons. Staff said the collected material equated to 14 40-yard containers and that 5.24 tons of compost had been distributed to residents. The presentation noted a new tire-collection component was added at the council’s request.
The presenter reviewed curbside bulky-item pickup rules (each household allowed two collection events per 12-month period, up to six items per event) and a used-oil pickup program for up to two gallons arranged through the vendor Vertech. Staff said event promotion appears in the city newsletter and calendar.
Committee members praised the cleanup program and said they had noticed less illegal dumping since events began. Staff said they would continue advertising the events and reviewing program effectiveness.
