Carlsbad commission sets Nov. 9 for fall North Beach cleanup; staff to promote volunteer event

The Carlsbad Beach Preservation Commission voted unanimously on Aug. 6 to hold its second 2024 city-controlled North Beach cleanup on Saturday, Nov. 9.
Planning manager Nick Stupin recommended dates and locations for the cleanup, with the proposed site running from Rue De Chateau northward to the Pine Avenue Beach Access near the public restrooms. Stupin said the event would run 8:30–10:30 a.m., with outreach through the city website, social media, an e-blast to the volunteer network and press releases.
Commissioners discussed weekend versus weekday timing and individual availability. After members noted conflicts with proposed October dates, Chair S1 moved to schedule the cleanup for Nov. 9; Commissioner Burrow (S8) seconded the motion and the commission voted by keypad, with staff reporting a unanimous outcome.
Staff said they plan to replicate outreach used for the July 12 cleanup (about 14 volunteers and roughly 100 pounds of trash collected, 10 pounds recyclable) and will add composting bins at the event to divert materials such as pizza boxes from landfill. Parks & Recreation staff were assigned follow-up tasks to publicize the event and coordinate volunteer logistics.
