Carlsbad Friends groups donate $35,000 and $100,000 to cultural and library programs

Two local nonprofit "Friends" groups presented donations to the city at the July 16 Carlsbad City Council meeting.
Suzanne Smithson, the city’s library and cultural arts director, introduced Liz Lichtenberger of Carlsbad Friends of the Arts, who said the organization — "a 501(c)(3) nonprofit" — has supported concerts and other arts programming for decades. Lichtenberger told the council that the Carlsbad Friends of the Arts were "honored to present you today with a $35,000 donation" to support TGIF concerts, arts education programs, front-row Saturdays and exhibits at the Cannon Art Gallery.
Smithson then introduced Taffy Cannon on behalf of the Friends of the Carlsbad Library. Cannon said book-sale income has returned to pre-pandemic levels and announced a $100,000 donation to the city. She described uses for the funds, including summer-reading rewards, author visits and materials and items for the library’s Exploration Hub such as filament for 3D printers that the community can use.
Council members thanked the volunteers and staff for their fundraising and noted the donations help the city sustain arts and library programming without drawing additional general-fund resources. Mayor Blackburn invited the council and the organizations to pose for a group photograph following the presentations.
Both Friends groups encouraged residents to join or volunteer; Lichtenberger referred listeners to their website for membership information.
