Transportation director reports signals connected, projects under way to ease Carlsbad congestion

City Transportation Director Tom Frank and Traffic Safety and Mobility Commission Chair Josh Coelho presented the semiannual transportation update, highlighting the city’s signal timing program, data-driven adjustments and several safety projects.
Frank said the city recently connected the last 5% of traffic signals to the high-speed fiber network, enabling remote timing adjustments and faster response to incidents. “If there’s a delay where cars are waiting at lights longer than normal, staff can adjust the signal timing in an area remotely to get the cars moving again,” Frank said.
Staff showed data visualizations of travel times and GPS field runs used to fine-tune timing plans and said they completed improvements at five crosswalks on Carlsbad Boulevard. Chair Josh Coelho praised staff’s adoption of “modern traffic design” principles and urged the council to continue supporting design-based solutions.
The update was informational; no council action was required.
