Recreation Services Manager Mick Clarco described the department’s annual aquatics staff training on June 1, which closed pools for the day so lifeguards could participate in extended emergency‑response scenarios.
Clarco said the training included unscripted scenarios in which part‑time staff did not know the specific drill. In one simulated near‑drowning, lifeguards stabilized a patient in the pool and began CPR before turning the patient over to the Carlsbad Fire Department, which demonstrated an automated chest‑compression device and AED monitoring that showed nearly a normal rhythm during the drill.
Clarco framed the exercise as an opportunity to rehearse handoffs between lifeguards and first responders and to practice first‑aid and emergency procedures under realistic conditions. He invited commissioners to observe aquatics events and noted another aquatic special, Pirate Plunge, is scheduled for July 20 at Alga Norte Aquatic Center.
