Recreation Services Manager Mick Clarco told the commission on June 17 that a range of department programs and events served residents over the past two months, with measurable outcomes and community engagement.
Clarco said the senior-center AARP tax-preparation program filed 832 federal returns this year—about 10% more than the prior year—which he described as a "very popular" and cost-effective service for older adults. He noted the program offers free assistance from certified preparers.
Clarco also described youth outreach: Friday-night tween and teen programs at Pine Avenue Community Park continue to attract participants, and an April 19 cooking competition drew about 25 youth who each prepared the same recipe and were judged by staff and a food-preparation instructor.
On community events, Clarco recapped the Leo Carrillo Ranch classic car show on April 13 (about 200 attendees) and the May 11 Hot Rods and Cool Treats event at Pine Avenue Community Park (roughly 800 attendees). He said teen program participants sold ice cream at the latter event to raise funds for their activities.
Clarco reported that this year's Fiesta fundraiser raised "nearly $25,000" to support the department's California history program, which brings fourth-grade classrooms from Carlsbad Unified and neighboring districts to the program free of charge.
He closed the presentation by inviting commissioners to department events and by announcing an aquatic summer special at Alga Norte Aquatic Center; he also said staff appreciate volunteers who assist across programs.
