Carlsbad Parks Commission gets timeline for Stagecoach garden, pool renovation and pickleball courts

The Carlsbad Parks and Recreation Commission on June 17 received multi-project updates from Park Services Manager Todd Rees that set near-term council milestones for several city parks and facilities.
Rees told commissioners that the Stagecoach Park community garden project is currently out for bid and staff "expect to bring our recommendations to award a construction contract to the City Council on July 23" with construction targeted to begin later in 2024. He said the bidding period closes soon and staff will return to the council to request a contract award.
The commission also heard that the Monroe Street Pool renovation consultant has produced 100% plans and specifications and that staff "anticipates returning to the city council with construction and plans and updated construction costs on 09/10/2024." Rees said staff have reviewed consultant materials and are refining the cost estimate and readiness for council action.
On Veterans Memorial Park, Rees said modifications to the park’s hydrology and grading were required to meet current standards; a local hydrology firm is completing design changes and staff expect the related work to be finished in July 2024 so plan checks can continue.
Rees summarized the City Council–approved charter to add eight outdoor pickleball courts—four at Calavera Hills Community Park and four at Stagecoach Community Park—saying the project is "estimated to cost approximately $2,000,000 to $2,400,000" and is anticipated to be completed roughly 24–28 months after work begins. He said staff will return to council for direction on final designs, cost estimates and funding.
The update included a regular 'active projects' slide that staff will keep current for commissioners; Rees said the slide is informational and does not require commissioner action at this time. The commission took no formal votes on these projects at the meeting.
