Council President Lacava presented a proclamation honoring Dr. Margaret Linen on her retirement for her leadership as vice chancellor for marine sciences, dean of the School of Marine Sciences and director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. Dr. Linen addressed the council and thanked elected officials for their partnership in advancing research and community engagement.
The proclamation noted Dr. Linen’s role in expanding Scripps’ faculty and campus and credited the institution with producing research that helps San Diegans understand local climate risks, from atmospheric rivers to coastal resilience. Councilmembers who had worked directly with Dr. Linen praised her efforts to translate science for local policy and budget decisions.
Councilmember Whitburn seconded the motion to adopt the proclamation and the clerk recorded the vote as passing with a unanimous recorded vote for those present. After the vote the council invited Dr. Linen to join them for a photo in “the pit.”
The proclamation does not create any new policy or funding requirement; it served as a ceremonial recognition of Dr. Linen’s public service and partnership with the City of San Diego.
