The National City City Council on a single evening adopted two ordinances and approved its consent calendar, moving forward changes city officials said align regulations with state guidance and adjust local governance practices.
The council voted to adopt an ordinance amending National City Municipal Code chapter 2.75 to adjust campaign contribution limits to match inflationary changes. City staff told the council this was a routine second reading with no substantive changes; after reopening and closing the public hearing the council voted to adopt the ordinance.
Council also adopted an ordinance establishing compensation for the mayor and council members. A public speaker urged modest allowances and caps for automobile and phone expenses; during council deliberations members spoke broadly about fairness and avoiding barriers to public service. The compensation ordinance passed 4–1, with Council Member Rodriguez recorded as the lone dissenting vote.
Other routine matters carried on the consent agenda. The council approved the consent calendar (items 8.1–8.11) including a short-term lease extension with a wireless company noted in public comment as yielding about $84,658 per year; staff clarified the extension runs only through Dec. 14, 2025.
What’s next: Both ordinances were approved at second reading and will take effect according to the city’s municipal procedures. The city clerk and city attorney will provide standard implementation timing information as part of the adopted ordinance records.
