The Torrance Unified School district board unanimously approved a series of tentative labor agreements and related salary-schedule disclosures Tuesday, ratifying deals with the teachers’ association and multiple employee unions after brief public comment praising negotiators.
A motion to approve the memorandum of understanding between the district and the Torrance Teacher Association (TTA) passed by voice vote, followed by approval of the tentative agreement related to salary schedules and public disclosure between the district and TTA. The board also approved tentative agreements with the California School Employees Association (CSEA) chapters 19 and 845, Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 99, and one-time salary increases for certificated and classified management and other unrepresented groups.
Why it matters: The approvals finalize contract terms negotiated this cycle and permit the district to publish new salary schedules. Trustees described the negotiations as collaborative and noted the approvals as an important step toward stabilizing workforce morale amid wider district and statewide budget pressures.
“It brings a lot of new language to the contract, which we believe is in the best interest of all our members and reflects the spirit of recruiting and retaining top‑notch teachers,” Amy Irvin, who addressed the board during the agenda item, said in support of the TTA agreement. A separate speaker representing the Torrance Teachers Association thanked the district’s bargaining team for working “in good faith” and described the tentative agreement as “a significant step forward” for members.
Board procedure and votes: Each item was called, seconded and approved by voice vote. The record shows unanimous “aye” responses for motions on items 10.1 (MOU with TTA), 10.2 (TTA tentative agreement/salary schedules and public disclosure), 10.3 (CSEA chapter 19), 10.4 (CSEA chapter 845), 10.5 (SEIU Local 99), and 10.6 (salary increases for management and unrepresented employees).
What comes next: The agreements approved tonight permit the district to post updated salary schedules and proceed with implementation steps outlined in the backup materials. Union leaders said they will continue advocacy for members where needed and confirmed the bargaining process will continue to address outstanding concerns.
