The Hillsborough Township Board of Education on Nov. 24 voted to table approval of the 2026–27 district calendar after teachers and community members urged more input on a proposed shorter spring break and potential conflicts with religious observances.
Teacher and HR committee representative Miss Nurse urged postponing approval to gather more front-line feedback, noting practical classroom concerns with long stretches between breaks and instructional continuity. "I would like to see the calendar postponed," she said, citing grading and testing timelines and the classroom impact of staggered absences.
Board members also flagged a possible conflict with Passover in 2027 and proposed adjusting the schedule so staff and families could observe religious traditions without last-minute contract changes. One board member proposed making a contested day a half day to accommodate preparation for the first Seder.
After discussion, Miss Nurse moved to table the vote on the 2026–27 calendar and Miss Stets (second) supported the motion. The board then took roll call and voted unanimously to suspend the calendar decision until the next meeting to collect additional public and staff input.
The calendar, once revisited, could be adjusted at a future meeting; in the meantime the administration will collect additional feedback from students, staff and families and return with proposed revisions.
