Board debates athletic fundraising and donation processes amid concerns about student pressure

One board member flagged the use of student cell phones to send solicitation texts and urged clearer messaging so donors know whether gifts are tax-deductible. The board discussed two parallel needs: creating a clearer internal process so donations and fundraisers align with district goals and ensuring families and students are not pressured or singled out.

The administration said it is working with PTOs and the BHEF to clarify submission timing for donation approval and to educate parent-club officers on compliant processes. Board members proposed options including maintaining an inventory of active athletic campaigns, clearer opt-out procedures for families, and improved communications about donor targets and beneficiary organizations. The board asked administration to continue developing guidance so fundraising supports students equitably and transparently.
