San Juan County Historical Society debuts website; Aztec approves museum program funding

The San Juan County Historical Society introduced its first website and photo gallery during the Aztec City Commission meeting Feb. 10, showcasing archival images, a timeline of local historical sites and a panel that lists county sheriffs from 1887 through 2026.
The presenter said the society’s current assets total about $52,000 (checking $14,000, savings $38,000) and that the organization operates on roughly an $11,000 annual budget; the last two years’ budgets ran closer to $14,000 while the society invested in its website and archiving technology. “We’re proud to announce the first launching to you of the San Juan County Historical Society website,” the presenter said.
The site includes a research structure for the community, a photo gallery and plans for events in June (Kirtland historical sites) and October (a historical reenactment addressing the San Juan County War and related local history). The presenter thanked local contributors and a donor whose Shane Ferrari collection provided historical sheriff photographs for the site.
During public comment, Joe Hubbard urged public accounting and preservation related to the El Camino Museum, saying the building was slated for demolition and arguing taxpayers had paid millions on the property. “Decades ago, this was wrong,” Hubbard said, calling for mistakes to be made public and historical information preserved.
On related funding matters, the commission approved an asset museum programs and services funding request for $8,475. The commission also voted to award the full building improvement funding request on the consent of the motion; the exact dollar amount for that request was not clearly stated in the meeting record provided to commissioners during the discussion and will be clarified by staff.
What’s next: Historical Society volunteers and staff will move forward with the website launch events and the city will provide follow-up on the building improvement funding amount.
