Fort Smith orders demolition of four long-vacant structures

The Fort Smith Board of Directors voted unanimously to order demolition of four dilapidated and hazardous structures on Jan. 20, authorizing the city administrator to cause demolition and pursue reimbursement through liens.
City staff said the properties (3222 Blair Ave., 3925 Roe Ave., 1108 North 9th St., and 510 North K St.) have long open cases, structural collapse or fire damage, and liens in some cases. The Blair property has been boarded and casework on it dates back to 2011, staff said. When the city pays demolition costs, staff will place cleanup liens on the properties and seek reimbursement; unpaid invoices may be certified to the county for collection and could ultimately be forfeited to the Commissioner of State Lands if the debt is not resolved.
The board suspended the rules and adopted the ordinance and emergency clause; the ordinance and emergency clause passed by roll call without opposition.
