State Sen. Brock Keane urges court to back resolution for larger county turnbacks

“I don’t feel like that we’re getting enough money back,” Sen. Keane said, noting that the county’s share from the RSA has fluctuated and that a recent drop to about 3.6% from near 5% was worrisome. Keane said he plans to pursue a resolution that would raise the RSA distribution by 2 percentage points and split funding so each of the 75 counties would receive $1,000,000 plus an additional population-based share.
Keane said his aim is to provide more stable funding for local needs such as road graders, senior centers and other county services, and that some legislative changes in the past had reduced funds previously used for local services. He invited court members to discuss the language and timing of a local resolution before the state budget session.
The court did not take a formal vote on Sen. Keane’s proposal during the meeting, but he said he would return to discuss specifics and coordinate on a resolution. Several court members thanked Sen. Keane for visiting and discussion was collegial.
Next steps: Sen. Keane said he will return to consult on draft language for a possible county resolution prior to the state budget process; no formal resolution was adopted at this meeting.
