Berkeley Stewart, who identified himself and read a statement from a neighbor, said the Western District is a significant wedding destination and that marriage-license services create downstream business for hotels, restaurants and venues. "If the position is evaluated purely on whether marriage license fees cover salary overhead, you're measuring the wrong metric," he said, and suggested options such as reduced hours, shared staffing and seasonal scheduling rather than a permanent closure.
Pearl Greg, also of Eureka Springs, said the absence of a clerk over a recent weekend was disruptive for residents and businesses and urged collaborative solutions so the community can continue to access courthouse services locally.
Court members acknowledged the testimony and said they would consider alternatives and data before taking final action; no final vote to close the position was recorded in the meeting.
