Pacific council adopts ordinance adding school walk zones to automated traffic camera enforcement

The City of Pacific City Council adopted Ordinance 2025-2112 on Oct. 13 to amend municipal code sections related to school walk zones and include them in automated traffic safety camera enforcement. Council Member Putnam moved to approve the ordinance and Council Member Katie Garberding seconded; the motion carried on a roll-call vote of 5-1, with Council Member Petersen voting no and Council Member Boles absent.
The ordinance amends sections 10.70.020, 10.70.030, 10.70.050 and 10.70.080 of the Pacific Municipal Code to explicitly add school walk zones to the city’s automated enforcement program. Supporters on the council said the change is intended to enhance pedestrian safety around schools amid increased traffic through the city following regional road closures.
Resident Jeanne Fancher asked the council to ensure "clear signage to be installed for the photo cameras." The request was noted during final reading; council members did not amend the ordinance on the floor to add specific signage requirements.
The measure moves the city toward expanded automated enforcement in areas designated as school walk zones. The council recorded Ayes from Kerry Garberding, Helms, Putnam, Mann and Katie Garberding; Petersen voted No. Boles was absent.
