Legal counsel: state emergency-management agreement could help municipal utilities with hurricane-restoration costs

During the meeting’s announcements, the utility’s legal counsel described a recently reached agreement with the Florida Division of Emergency Management that could allow the division to step in to pay hurricane restoration costs for municipal electric utilities and then seek FEMA reimbursement.
"We have reached an agreement in a form of an agreement, with the division of emergency management for the division of emergency management to potentially step in and pay hurricane restoration costs for electric utilities, municipal electric utilities," counsel said, adding that the division would then seek reimbursement from FEMA. Counsel credited the governor's office and the director of the Division of Emergency Management for the arrangement and said the tool could be available for future storms.
Counsel said the agreement was negotiated rapidly and could be another tool municipal utilities use in the future; no immediate implementation steps specific to Fort Pierce were announced at the meeting.
