West Orange board highlights: teacher award, Kyrie Irving donation and routine approvals

"On behalf of the entire board, I offer my sincere congratulations to Miss Burnett," President Rock said, adding that the district is fortunate to have her commitment to students and curriculum.
In the Superintendent's report the district announced a donation: "a donation of uniforms and equipment to our middle school athletic program" from Kyrie Irving and his organization, an item the board thanked him for as a hometown supporter.
The board then moved through routine agenda business: it approved personnel items A1–A6 (including recognition of retiree Mary Byrne of Washington Elementary), curriculum and instruction items B1–B3, finance and business office items C and addendum items 24–26, and reports D1–D5. Each measure was moved and approved by roll call with recorded yes votes from Mister Stevenson, Vice President Ifker and President Rock.
Why it matters: The Amistad Commission award highlights district curriculum work on African American history; the athletic donation is a material contribution to middle‑school sports; and the approved personnel and budget items implement everyday district operations ahead of the school year.
What’s next: The board announced its next meeting for 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 15, 2025 in the West Orange High School Library Media Center. No executive session was scheduled after the Aug. 18 meeting.
