Allendale names longtime teacher and veteran Walter Widmer its first ’hometown hero’

At the Dec. 18 meeting, Mayor Wilczynski announced the borough will launch a small committee and a new “hometown hero” recognition next year to honor residents, business owners or volunteers who have demonstrated long-term service to Allendale.
The mayor introduced Walter Widmer as the borough’s first honoree, noting his military service and more than 30 years teaching biology at Ramapo High School. The mayor said Widmer’s steady presence at council meetings and his volunteer work — including membership on the borough green team — make him a natural selection for the pilot recognition.
Councilmembers and staff praised Widmer’s commitment to the community. The mayor said the program will begin in the coming year and will be overseen by a small committee that will solicit nominations.
