Scotland Public Library board flags outdoor-lighting safety, approves reports and plans June birthday celebration

The Scotland Public Library Board of Trustees on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, flagged a continuing outdoor-lighting failure as a safety concern, approved routine reports and minutes, and began planning a June 7 building birthday celebration.
Chairperson Joanne Todd called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. The trustees approved the February minutes after a motion by Angela Maschka and a second from Beth Delaney. The group then accepted the February financial report — delivered by Maschka, who noted the trust account was "down slightly" — following a motion from Brenda Gagnon and a second from Delaney. Mary Geragotelis, the library director, presented the director’s report, citing February attendance and circulation statistics and reporting that the "Take your child to the library" and Dr. Seuss birthday events were well attended; the board accepted that report on a motion by Delaney, seconded by Maschka.
Geragotelis told trustees that an outdoor-lighting failure remains a safety issue for the library and that she has contacted the first Selectman to ask whether updating the lighting would be the best solution; she said she will follow up again because no solution has been reached yet. The board did not take a formal action on lighting at the meeting but listed follow-up with the first Selectman as a next step.
On facility and program items, Geragotelis said she has ordered cling art for a children’s-section mural and plans to start the project this month. She reported the Eagle Scout trail and bridge maintenance project remains on hold for the winter and will resume when weather allows. Geragotelis also said Poet Laureate Susan Powers has been in touch and may resume writing workshops in April or May.
Trustees began planning a library building birthday celebration for June 7. Proposed elements include an early "Adopt-a-book" drive and a birthday-style party with crafts and games; trustee Brenda Gagnon offered to donate a sheet cake for the event.
Geragotelis said she has submitted the proposed library budget for 2025–2026. She also notified the board that the library’s computers will need an operating-system upgrade before October; the board plans to discuss the timing and any associated costs at the next meeting. The board developed the April meeting agenda, and Chair Joanne Todd adjourned the meeting at 7:40 p.m.
The board accepted the routine reports and recorded the items above as follow-ups; trustees expect to revisit lighting and the computer upgrade at a future meeting.
