Hawthorne wins $421,336 NJDOT paving grant; road and water projects slated

The borough received a $421,336 grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation to repave Westervelt Avenue, North 7th Street and McFarland Avenue, the administrative presenter said during the meeting.
"The New Jersey Department of Transportation has awarded Hawthorne a grant in the amount of $421,336 for repaving Westervelt Ave, North 7th Street and McFarland Avenue," the presenter reported.
Engineer Joe Byrne briefed the council on the 2024–25 road program and local‑aid projects, listing streets where paving and ADA ramp work are underway and saying that the remaining milling and paving for North Watchung, Grandview and Hawthorne will be completed the week of Dec. 1, after Thanksgiving.
"The remaining milling and paving work for North Watchung, Grandview and Hawthorne will be completed the week of December 1, after Thanksgiving," the engineer said.
Byrne also reported that PSE&G’s service installations are progressing on Hawthorne Avenue and that the Peachtree Tank rehabilitation paperwork has been submitted to the New Jersey I‑Bank; once approved, a pre‑construction meeting will be scheduled.
These projects tie to other items introduced earlier in the meeting, including a water‑utility bond ordinance intended to fund main replacements and to loop a main through a health‑care facility.
