Sayreville council keeps time‑sensitive housing element resolution on consent agenda and approves consent package

The Sayreville mayor and council on March 9 debated whether two late additions should remain on the consent agenda after a canceled agenda meeting. Borough Attorney told the council that resolution 26‑83 — endorsing the amended housing element/fair‑share plan — was time sensitive because of a court‑ordered statutory deadline of March 15 and recommended it be included on the consent agenda so the borough could meet the deadline.

Council members discussed local ordinance rules that generally bar adding items to the consent agenda without prior agenda consideration, and some members argued non‑emergent items should be deferred. After discussion the council voted to keep resolution 26‑83 on the consent agenda and to table the other late addition (26‑82) to the next meeting to avoid renumbering confusion.

The council then approved the consent agenda on a roll‑call vote. The package included contract renewals and awards (for social worker services and police training), a change order for Musco Sports Lighting for the little league, equipment purchases for snow removal, fee waivers for a temple special event, water‑well pump repairs, personnel promotions and the endorsement of the borough’s amended housing element. The borough attorney said the housing‑element action is tied to the Fair Share Housing settlement process and the court deadline.

Council leaders said that because the February agenda meeting was canceled by weather they sought to accommodate the judicial deadline while following municipal procedure where possible. The borough will publish the final details of the endorsed housing element and follow the compliance steps outlined by the borough’s consultant.
