Committee approves support for RIDE waivers tied to February snow emergency

The committee voted unanimously to support the commissioner's decision to waive instructional days for February related to a declared state of emergency and approved a revised weather waiver to the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) requesting forgiveness for five school days.
Dr. Thornton explained the district experienced a snow event earlier in February that produced two emergency days and that staff originally sought three days in the first submission but recalculated and asked RIDE for five days of forgiveness after further review of minutes and allowable days. "So we're asking for 5 because we might need 1 extra... I think we have, like, 5.8, something like that," Dr. Thornton said.
Miss Smith clarified that the request is exclusive of February 23 and 24. Dr. Thornton said, if RIDE grants the request, it would preserve the district's original scheduled end-of-school date of June 18. The superintendent said the commissioner will present her request to the state board at the end of the month; locally the school committee affirmed its support.
The motions to support the commissioner and to approve the revised waiver were both approved 6-0.
