Contractor says dome at 802 Green Street is structurally deficient; work halted pending engineered plans

Contractor Anthony Mallett told the Augusta Historic Preservation Commission that work to remove and repair the dome at 802 Green Street has stopped because the building inspector required an engineered design to replace the deteriorated wooden frame.
Staff presented inspector notes and photo evidence showing decay of the dome superstructure. The inspector wrote: "Existing wooden frame is deteriorating and must be replaced. An engineered design system must be used." Mallett said his crew removed the superstructure and the inspector concluded the remaining framing could not support a roof cover as originally planned.
Mallett described owner-contractor issues that left the crew unpaid and the project paused: "We're stopped," he told the commission. He said the superstructure had been temporarily fastened and "could have fallen off, fallen into the school, fallen into the street," describing a potential safety hazard that prompted the inspector’s direction for an engineered plan.
City staff and counsel confirmed the building permit had been issued and had not yet expired; staff said they will verify whether required plans had been submitted and will follow up. Historic Augusta reported the building is under contract and that work must be completed for the sale to close. Commissioners asked staff to continue oversight and to report back with the permit status and any engineering submittals.
