The Senate Health Committee voted to report House Bill 5,004 to the full Senate after counsel characterized the bill as an educational measure focused on pediatric acute neuropsychiatric syndromes (PANS) and pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections (PANDAS).
Counsel said the bill is educational in nature and is not an insurance mandate; the Department of Health would be the impacted agency and the measure would take effect in 90 days. Delegate Ian Masters (House District 91) told the committee about his daughter's prolonged path to diagnosis and recovery, including treatments ranging from prolonged antibiotics to intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG). Masters said earlier recognition and education for clinicians and families could shorten the time to effective treatment.
Senators thanked the delegate for bringing the issue forward. With no amendments offered, the vice chair moved that HB 5,004 be reported favorably to the full Senate and the committee approved the motion.
The bill now goes to the full Senate for further consideration.
