Summary
WMGLD and Wakefield Public Schools recognized student winners from the 19th annual Energy Conservation sticker contest; the utility’s representative said nearly 300 entries were submitted and seven winners were announced and presented with certificates and window clings.
School officials and Wakefield Municipal Gas and Light Department (WMGLD) representatives presented awards to elementary students on March 24 after a district celebration of the WMGLD Energy Conservation Art (sticker) Contest.
Joe Collins, representing WMGLD, described the contest’s evolution and said there were close to 300 submissions from fourth graders across the district’s four elementary schools and Saint Joseph School; 39 entries were selected for posters and seven students were named winners. "The judging was difficult because there's so many great drawings," Collins said as winners were presented with certificates and window clings.
Superintendent Doug Lyons and curriculum staff thanked elementary STEM coordinator Lisa Tibbetts, science specialists Carrie Tyrell and Jen Holder, and school staff involved in the contest. The committee and attendees applauded the student presentations; one winner absent from the event (Julia Scafidi) was noted.
The ceremony was presented as part of the superintendent’s remarks and provided a public-facing example of district-community partnerships and arts learning activities. Separately on the consent agenda the committee accepted a $1,500 stipend donation from the Wakefield Track Boosters Club to fund an assistant track coach for the 2025–26 winter season; the committee approved that gift by roll call.
What’s next: Staff will arrange display of contest posters at district locations and continue WMGLD outreach tied to energy-conservation education.
