On independent educational-evaluation policy (246003/5517), a committee member said enforcement feels weak and suggested making the relevant form more accessible (printed copies in offices and clearer web links).
Suspension and expulsion policy (5610) drew attention to definition changes: board members confirmed the template now consolidates reference to guardians under the definition of 'parent' so separate guardian references were removed. Facility security (policy 7440) prompted a longer exchange: members discussed the trade-offs of wanding and walk-through metal detectors, staff said handheld wands have not been used in standard school buildings and that SROs would be involved when weapons are suspected, and staff recommended a workshop with legal counsel because search practices raise privacy and legal-rights issues.
Other changes noted: the district will keep its locally tailored volunteer policy language rather than accepting Neola’s broader suggested language, and Neola updated the policy title 'nursing mothers' to 'lactating employees' (policy 8700) to align with statutory wording; staff said the policy sets a one-year baseline consistent with statute but the district will accommodate requests beyond one year when warranted.
A board member raised concerns that language allowing immediate removal of challenged materials during review could make many items inaccessible during lengthy review processes; staff acknowledged the risk and said the packet clarifies options but that the board should monitor the removal/availability balance.
The committee moved to recommend the proposed policy changes to the full board; the motion passed.
What happens next: Staff will incorporate the requested clarifications, ensure the district website reflects local volunteer policy language, and return revised policies to the board at a future meeting.
