Council confirms new fire chief; police‑chief nomination ends in tie, interim chief remains

After an executive session to evaluate applicants for department heads, Interim City Administrator Ron Jacobson presented appointments for council confirmation.
Jacobson recommended Greg Yeager for police chief. Council first voted on a motion to reject the recommendation, which failed, then later recorded a tie vote (3–3) on a motion to approve Yeager; with the mayor abstaining from a tie‑breaking vote, the nomination failed to produce a confirmed appointment and council decided to continue with the interim police chief and consider the matter after a permanent city administrator is in place.
Jacobson then recommended Jake Beaker as fire chief; council voted and confirmed Beaker unanimously. Council members who spoke in favor of internal promotion cited the strength of internal candidates and the value of promoting from within where appropriate.
The council agreed the police staffing decision may be revisited when the permanent city administrator is available to make recommendations.
