San Carlos council asks staff to bring $5,000 NAMI Walks sponsorship request back for consideration

Rocio Cornejo Panamino, director of education for NAMI San Mateo County, asked the San Carlos City Council on Aug. 11 to consider a $5,000 city sponsorship for the group's Oct. 4 NAMI Walks fundraiser. "We would be so honored if the city of San Carlos would join us as a $5,000 sponsor of this year's NAMI Walks," she said, noting NAMI SMC served more than 9,000 people last year and that about 13 percent of those served live in San Carlos.
Mayor MacDowell asked staff to place the sponsorship request on a future agenda for council consideration. Several council members supported considering the item but also urged staff to review the city's process for sponsorships and grants. Council member Rack and others said that, while NAMI is a worthwhile organization, the city receives many sponsorship requests and that the community foundation process exists to route grants. Mayor MacDowell said the October event timeline makes the foundation process impractical as an immediate path and said she would treat the request as an exception this cycle while encouraging NAMI to use the foundation process in future years.
Next steps: staff will place the request on a future meeting agenda and will also consider whether the council needs clearer policy guidance on direct sponsorships versus routing requests through the community foundation.
