Summary
During the March 9 meeting a resident cited United Way ALICE data and suggested the council examine evidence‑based programs; the council also announced a tire collection day (April 11) and other community events.
At the March 9 meeting resident Sue Castle (422 Kennedy Drive) used the privilege of the floor to urge council members to consider approaches from the book Poor Economics and to address local poverty. Castle cited United Way ALICE data indicating high child poverty and economic insecurity in South Bend and said the book contains programs that might be adapted locally.
"We have over half our kids getting free school lunches. We have over 40% poverty in South Bend according to United Way's ALICE ratings," Castle said, urging the council to consider what has worked elsewhere.
Council members also used new business to announce community events and resources: Vice President Naskoski promoted a Solid Waste Management District tire collection day on Saturday, April 11 at the Kerr Street Station; council staff noted a youth advisory council curriculum session and upcoming Women's History Month highlights; and a council member announced a Notre Dame trade show on March 12 at the Stepin Center to showcase skilled‑trades careers.
The meeting closed after routine business and the council adjourned.
