An agency official (S1) told attendees that Lee County’s Human and Veteran Services department serves residents through direct staff and contracted nonprofit partners, saying, “We have over 85 employees here,” and that the department contracts out “millions of dollars” to local nonprofits.
The official said the department operates with more than 20 funding sources and that “our budget is over $50,000,000,” funded by federal, state and local grants. The funding supports a mix of direct services and contracts with nonprofit providers, the official said.
A second agency official (S2) described the department’s case management and housing programs, noting it runs rapid rehousing, the HOPWA program, Empowerly, veteran services and diversion programs to connect households to resources and move them toward longer-term stability. “We serve as the lead agency and collaborative applicant for the Lee County homeless continuum of care, providing system leadership and strategic direction for homeless services in Lee County,” the official said.
S2 also described coordinated entry as the county’s central access point for people experiencing homelessness and said a housing outreach and treatment team—“a collaboration between us, law enforcement, and local behavioral health providers”—helps refer and connect households to supportive services.
S1 highlighted services for veterans, saying the department has four dedicated veteran services officers who “help them access benefits that they've earned through their military service.”
The department also offers other assistance programs, the official said, including help with electric bills, homeless prevention and short-term rent assistance, an indigent cremation program, owner-occupied home rehabs and down payment assistance. The official added that each program has eligibility rules and that services are targeted to low-income residents.
