Summary
Tom Rose, Smyrna public works director, outlined ongoing work including sidewalks on Rock Springs Road, bridge decking near Waldron Road, resurfacing on Stewart Valley Drive, storm pipe installation at Old Nashville and Sam Ridley, and planned lane and intersection improvements at Sam Ridley and Old Nashville.
Tom Rose, public works director for the Town of Smyrna, gave a brief update on ongoing and upcoming road and sidewalk projects affecting several corridors in town.
Rose said crews are installing sidewalks along Rock Springs Road from Hart's Branch Bridge to Mason Tucker as "phase 1 of a larger effort to connect downtown sidewalks to Old Nashville Highway, improving walkability and connectivity across our community." He also reported that crews are installing rebar and bridge decking for the Rock Springs Road bridge near Waldron Road.
On pavement maintenance, Rose said resurfacing is underway on Stewart Valley Drive "giving drivers a smoother and safer roadway." For drainage, he reported crews are installing storm pipe at Old Nashville Highway and Sam Ridley Parkway to support corridor improvements.
Describing a major intersection project, Rose said, "When the Sam Ridley at Old Nashville Highway project is complete, this will provide 2 straight through lanes and double left turn lanes on all 4 legs of this intersection." He placed that work in the context of a broader plan that incorporates the completed Sam Ridley widening between I-24 and Old Nashville Highway, recent intersection improvements at Genie Lane and Old Nashville Highway, and a future improvement planned at Old Nashville Highway and Rock Springs Road.
Rose also announced a safety change that has already been implemented: "A protected permissive left turn has been installed on Jefferson Pike at Hickory Grove Road, improving safety and traffic flow at this key intersection." He advised the public to "use caution and follow all posted traffic control in the area" while work continues.
For the latest details, Rose directed residents to "visit townofsmyrna.org and head to the projects page where you'll find our interactive project map with all the current details." He closed by inviting questions to the public works department and saying, "Stay safe out there."
